Why does China promote simplified Characters?

zuò wéi wài ɡuó rén,kāi shǐ xué xí hàn zì yǐ hòu,nǐ yí dìnɡ huì fā xiàn,zài nǐ de shǒu jī zhōnɡ, yǒu liǎnɡ zhǒnɡ bù tónɡ de hàn zì,yì zhǒnɡ shì jiǎn tǐ zì,yì zhǒnɡ shì fán tǐ zì。

As a foreigner, when you start learning Chinese characters, you will definitely find that there are two different type of Chinese characters in your mobile phone, one is simplified characters and the other is traditional characters.

1956 nián yī yuè èr shí bā rì,jiǎn tǐ zì kāi shǐ zài quán ɡuó tuī xínɡ,xiàn zài wǒ men xué xí hé shǐ yònɡ de jī běn dōu shì jiǎn tǐ zì。

On January 28, 1956, simplified Chinese characters began to be implemented nationwide, and characters which we are learning and using now are basically simplified Chinese characters.

ɡuān yú jiǎn tǐ zì hé fán tǐ zì,wǒ men shǒu xiān yào mínɡ què yí ɡè shì shí,zài zhōnɡ ɡuó,wǒ men zhǐ shì tuī xínɡ jiǎn tǐ zì,dàn shì bìnɡ méi yǒu jīn yònɡ fán tǐ zì,duì yú hěn duō zhōnɡ ɡuó rén lái shuō,tā men shì ké yǐ kàn de dǒnɡ fán tǐ zì de,zhǐ shì kě nénɡ bú huì xiě。

Regarding simplified and traditional characters, we must first clarify the fact. We only promote simplified characters, but traditional characters are not prohibited in China. For many Chinese people, they can understand traditional characters, but they may not be able to write .

rú jīn,nǐ yī rán ké yǐ kàn dào fán tǐ zì de shēn yǐnɡ,bǐ rú zài shū fǎ yì shù zhōnɡ,wén wù ɡǔ jì,yì xiē tí cí hé zhāo pái zhōnɡ,yě yǒu yì xiē zhuān yè shū jí dānɡ zhōnɡ děnɡ 。

Today, you can still see traditional characters in many places, such as calligraphy art, cultural relics, some inscriptions and signboards, and also some professional books, etc.

nà me,dānɡ shí de zhōnɡ ɡuó zhènɡ fǔ wèi shén me yào tuī xínɡ jiǎn tǐ zì ne?

So, why did the Chinese government implement simplified Chinese characters at that time?

hàn zì jiǎn huà shì shè huì fā zhǎn de qū shì。

Simplification of Chinese characters is the trend of social development.

cónɡ zhōnɡ ɡuó lì shǐ shànɡ lái kàn, ónɡ qín cháo qǐ,hàn zì jiù chū xiàn le “zhènɡ tǐ” hé “cáo tǐ ” de fēn huà。“zhènɡ tǐ ”yònɡ yú bǐ jiào zhènɡ shì de chǎnɡ hé, “cáo tǐ ” yònɡ yú fēi zhènɡ shì de chǎnɡ hé。wèi le fānɡ biàn,zài cáo tǐ zhōnɡ jiù chǎn shēnɡ le duì hàn zì bǐ huà de jiǎn huà。èr zhě fēn ɡōnɡ shǐ yònɡ,xiānɡ hù bǔ chōnɡ。

From a historical perspective, the differentiation of “正体(zhènɡ tǐ),which means standardized form of Chinese characters ” and “草体(cáo tǐ), which means cursive characters” appeared in Chinese characters since Qin Dynasty . “正体(zhènɡ tǐ)” is used for more formal occasions, and “草体(cáo tǐ)” is used for informal occasions. For convenience, simplified Chinese character strokes have been created in 草体(cáo tǐ). And the two are used separately and complement each other.

yīn wèi cáo tǐ shū xiě fānɡ biàn、shǐ yònɡ ɡuǎnɡ fàn,yīn ér tā bù kě bì miǎn de huì duì zhènɡ tǐ zì zào chénɡ yínɡ xiǎnɡ。qín cháo yǐ xiǎo zhuàn wéi zhènɡ tǐ zì,yǐ lì shū wéi cáo tǐ ;dào le xī hàn,lì shū jiù qǔ dài le xiǎo zhuàn,chénɡ wéi zhènɡ tǐ le,kǎi shū zé qǔ dài le yuán lái lì shū de wèi zhi, chénɡ wéi le cáo tǐ。dōnɡ hàn yǐ hòu,kǎi shū yòu dài tì le lì shū chénɡ wéi zhènɡ tǐ,lìnɡ yì zhǒnɡ zì tǐ — — xínɡ shū,chénɡ wéi le tōnɡ xínɡ de cáo tǐ。

Because 草体(cáo tǐ) is quite easy to write and widely used, it will inevitably affect 正体(zhènɡ tǐ). In the Qin Dynasty, Xiaozhuan was used as the standardized form of Chinese characters, and Lishu was used as the cursive script; in the Western Han Dynasty, Lishu replaced Xiaozhuan as the standardized form of Chinese characters, and Kaishu replaced Lishu as the cursive script. After the Eastern Han Dynasty, Kaishu replaced Lishu and became the standardized form of Chinese characters, and Xingshu became the common cursive characters.

zài xīn zhōnɡ ɡuó de jiàn ɡuó chū qī, zhōnɡ ɡuó de wén mánɡ lǜ dá dào le 80%,jué dà duō shù rén dōu méi yǒu dú ɡuò shū。ɡuó jiā línɡ dǎo rén wèi le kuài sù de qù wén mánɡ huà,bù dé bù tuī xínɡ hàn zì jiǎn huà。

In the early days of the founding of New China, the illiteracy rate in China reached 80%, and most people had never studied in school. In order to get rid of illiteracy very quickly, national leaders had to implement simplified Chinese characters.

yīn wèi zài ɡōnɡ yè shí dài,ɡuó jiā de fā zhǎn yāo qiú měi ɡè rén jù yǒu ɡènɡ ɡāo de jī běn sù zhì, ér zhè hěn dà chénɡ dù shànɡ yào yī lài jiào yù de biāo zhǔn huà hé pǔ jí。ér fán tǐ zì nán xiě nán jì bìnɡ qiě fēi chánɡ nán dǒnɡ,duì dà duō shù rén lái shuō,xué qǐ lái tài kùn nan。

Because in the industrial age, the development of the country requires everyone to have a higher basic quality, and this largely depends on the standardization and popularization of education. Traditional Chinese characters are difficult to write and remember, and also very hard to understand. It is too difficult for most people to master  traditional characters.

ɡēn fán tǐ zì xiānɡ bǐ, jiǎn tǐ zì ɡènɡ rónɡ yì shū xiě hé jì yì。

Compared with traditional characters, simplified characters are easier to write and remember.

jiǎn huà hòu de hàn zì zài diàn nǎo shí dài dà dà fānɡ biàn le rén men de shǐ yònɡ,wǒ men ké yǐ yònɡ jiàn pán qīnɡ qīnɡ sōnɡ sōnɡ dǎ chū měi ɡè hàn zì。

Simplified Chinese characters have greatly facilitated people’s use in the computer age. We can type each Chinese character easily with the keyboard.

xiàn zài dà bù fen rén dōu yònɡ pīn yīn shū rù fǎ lái dǎ hàn zì,jì de wǒ hěn xiǎo de shí hou zài shǐ yònɡ pīn yīn shū rù fǎ zhī qián,cénɡ jīnɡ xué xí yònɡ wǔ bǐ zì xínɡ shū rù fǎ dǎ zì,ér wǔ bǐ shū rù fǎ shì wán quán yī jù bǐ huà hé zì xínɡ tè zhēnɡ duì hàn zì jìn xínɡ biān mǎ de,rú ɡuǒ wǒ men yònɡ de shì fán tǐ zì,kǒnɡ pà wǔ bǐ shū rù fǎ huì kùn nan de duō。

Most people now use Pinyin input method to type Chinese characters. I remember that before I used Pinyin input method when I was very young, I learned to type with Wubi input method, and Wubi input method is completely based on strokes. If we use traditional characters, I am afraid the Wubi input method will be much more difficult.

You can understand how we type Chinese characters with Wubi input method blow.

zài jīn tiān,yī rán yǒu hěn duō zhōnɡ ɡuó rén ɡènɡ xǐ huɑn shǐ yònɡ wǔ bǐ shū rù fǎ,yīn wèi hé pīn yīn shū rù fǎ xiānɡ bǐ,wǔ bǐ shū rù fǎ de chónɡ mǎ lǜ ɡènɡ dī,shú liàn hòu kě nénɡ dǎ zì ɡènɡ kuài。

Today, there are still many Chinese who prefer to use the Wubi input method, because compared with the Pinyin input method, the Wubi input method has a lower repetition rate and may be faster to type after proficiency.
